Learning about Quantization

Quantization is a key part of the music production process. Any active musician needs to understand the basics of quantization and how it is used in the music production process.

We are going to build on the skills we have previously learned in class, so everything you have already learned will become the baseline for this lesson.

Quantization is essentially the process of aligning midi notes to the grid in your DAW (digital audio workstation). We can adjust the grid, so that we can align notes to any subdivision of time; eighth notes, sixteenth notes, etc.

We are going to take these misaligned notes:

And align them nicely to the grid, like so:
